How Often Does Evolution Happen?

The textbook definition of evolution is the process by which organisms change over time due to changes in inheritable physical or behavioral traits. As human beings, we are always evolving mentally, physically, emotionally, and/or logically. But I need to you to ask yourself, how often does evolution truly happen?

Personally, I believe that I evolve every single day. Who I was yesterday is definitely not who I am today. Hell, I’m not even the same person I was 10 minutes ago. But, why do I feel this way?

As a media society, we are engulfed in so many topics and differences of opinion that we are practically forced to adjust our thinking, if you’re open to understanding a different perspective that is. For example, I can claim the sky is blue because it reflects off of the ocean. Though, after a conversation with an astronomer, I learned that it has to do with the gases and particles present in Earth’s atmosphere. I can no longer keep the thought I once had for I now know the truth.

That was an intellectual example, let’s try a physical one. An individual who goes to the gym every day, evolves every single day because their muscles are constantly being worked on. This is the same way our mind works. If we are constantly feeding our minds and souls with information on  daily basis, it is evitable we replace our former thoughts with new epiphanies.

Our feelings and emotions constantly evolve as well. How often does your feelings change for your partner? I think it’s near impossible to like your partner every minute of every day. And who were you at the beginning of that relationship? And who are you now? What has changed about you? Are you more understanding? Do you have better communication skills? Or are you depressed? Are you lost? Well baby girl, that’s evolution, the positive or negative change over time.

Let’s look into careers. Say you had a lifelong dream of becoming an architect. But as time passed, and you grew to learn you’re actually passionate about helping people. Are you going to stay an architect, or are you going to find something that feeds your passion like being a nurse, psychologist, or social worker? I’m pretty sure you’re going to go with the latter. And why is that okay? Because your outlook has changed and what you thought you wanted to do really isn’t what you’re meant to be doing.

Sh*t look at me! I spent five years in college getting a business communications degree only to start studying chemistry, anatomy and physiology to prepare for my nursing school entrance exam. Mind you I just graduated 3 months ago. See how fast things change.

From my own personal experience, I can tell you guys that it is okay to change your mind, opinion, body, sexual preferences, etc. as many times as you want. Everyone’s mindset changes because we’re always learning and discovering new things about ourselves. That’s the beauty of life.

So the next time you hear someone change their stance, don’t judge or reprimand them because they are correcting the statements of their pre-evolved self.
